FAQ

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

Hydroponic gardening relies on nutrient rich water rather than soil to provide nutrients for plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. It's like having a farm right in your backyard.

Can I grow vegetables indoors

Yes, you can grow vegetables inside in the winter. You will need to purchase a greenhouse or grow lights. Before purchasing a greenhouse or grow lights, be sure to consult the local laws.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

Herbs should be planted during springtime when soil temperatures reach 55degF. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. Basil indoors can be grown in pots with potting mixture. They should be kept out of direct sunlight until they grow leaves. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

How much space do vegetable gardens need?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. If you have a 10-foot by 10-foot area (3m by 3m), then 100 pounds will be needed.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
