How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
