How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
