How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
