FAQ

What is the maximum time I can keep an indoor plant alive for?

Indoor plants can survive for many years. To ensure new growth, it's important that you repot indoor plants every few years. Repotting is simple. Remove the old soil and place fresh compost.

When should you plant herbs?

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. They should be in full sun to get the best results. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After three weeks, transplant the plants to individual containers. Water them frequently.

What is the first thing to do when starting a garden?

The first thing you should do when starting a new garden is prepare the soil. This involves adding organic matter, such as composted soil, grass clippings and leaves, straw or other material, to help provide nutrients for the plants. Next, plant seeds or seedlings into prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

How much space does a vegetable garden require?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. For example, if you have a 10 foot by 10 foot area (3 meters by three meters), 100 pounds of seeds will be required.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers in spring is easier when the temperature is lower and the soil remains moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature to grow plants indoors is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 hours of indirect sunlight. The majority of vegetables require 10 hours of direct sunshine per 24 hour period.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
