Fall and winter are great times to plant. For summer enjoyment, you can plant autumn-flowering bulbs such as lilies or tulips once the weather turns cooler. Evergreen trees are also possible, and will be able to withstand the cold winter months. The air is cooler in the fall, but the soil remains warm and humid, so planting evergreens in the autumn is an excellent choice for gardening in the fall.

FAQ

What is the best way to determine what kind of soil I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. A second option is soil testing. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

What's the difference between aquaponic and hydroponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening relies on nutrient rich water rather than soil to provide nutrients for plants. Aquaponics is a system that combines fish tanks and plants to create an ecosystem that is self-sufficient. Aquaponics is like having your own farm in your home.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. It is important to be aware that bacteria wilt can quickly kill plants.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal of a planting calendar is to maximize plant growth and minimize stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

When to plant herbs?

Herbs should be planted during springtime when soil temperatures reach 55degF. Plant them in full sun for best results. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
