Small trees in big pots are your most versatile garden tools for a patio with little to no space for planting. These plants can solve many problems, which are often overlooked. A row of palms may distract the eye away from an unsightly wall. However, a row or small trees can screen out unattractive views. You can even plant some plants in large pots to fill up empty corners and provide off-season interest. Below are some of our favorite plants for growing on patios.

herb gardening in containers

Use a large container for your plants. The container should be big enough to hold the plants you want to grow. The container should be deep enough that it can hold water. For patio gardening, you can use a wooden half barrel or a plastic tub. You can also use a planter box, ceramic pot or bushel basket for patio gardening. You should keep in mind that certain vegetables are best planted in deep containers. Others can be planted easily using shallow pots.

Although a patio container garden offers many benefits, it is still a need for ongoing care. Watering is the most challenging task. It should be done regularly, even daily in summer. You should water the plants well, and let the water drain out of the hole in the bottom. You will ruin the plants' natural beauty if you don't do this. A patio container gardening can be a wonderful and productive addition to your house.

You want your patio to be both attractive and useful. Be clear about what your patio is for. You have the option to use your patio for privacy or socializing. To add beauty and charm to your patio, you can plant trees, shrubs, or flowers. Another option is to plant plants for the pollinators. These plants will attract butterflies as well as bees and hummingbirds. Whatever your preferences may be, it is important to consider the seasonal conditions and the weather before choosing which type of planting you want.

Gardening Ideas

Plants that attract beneficial insects and pollinators are best. You can put flowers in different containers or in a ground container. The best vegetable garden layout depends on where you live. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
