How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
