springtime gardening tips

For those who have limited space or poor soil conditions, a raised herb garden is a good option. Raised beds can be used to grow many different herbs in one area, no matter if they are Mediterranean herbs or not. You also have options of different containers for housing your plants, including baskets and flower boxes. Decide how much space you want to dedicate to your new herb garden, and then start planning the perfect container.

Raised garden beds are inexpensive and easy to construct. These garden beds are constructed of stacked wooden planks or a wood framework. Place the herbs in them and fill with soil. Place the herbs at least 2 feet apart. You can also mark the locations with decorative post. If you need to water your plants, you can add a drip irrigation system. After plants have grown, you can divide them. Alternatively, you can use raised garden beds to grow flowers and other types of edible flowers.

Next, prepare the planting area by lightly raking out the clods. Place the soil in the indentation, and water the plants gently. Don't forget to fertilize your herbs regularly to ensure a healthy plant.

A raised herb garden is much easier to manage than potted herbs. The space will allow you to grow herbs without overcrowding your kitchen. There may be a few types of plants that are appropriate for this space. It is possible to plant multiple herbs in one container, or add them to an already existing garden. Basil and some other herbs repel insects and attract them naturally. Thyme can be used to protect your strawberries and cauliflower plants.

A raised herb garden gives your herbs a special spot in your yard. To make harvesting easier and more organized, you can place herbs in different pockets. Raised herb gardens will make it easier to keep the soil aerated, and help prevent weeds. Pests will be protected by a strong herb garden. The top of a raised herb planter is slightly higher than its lower counterpart. It is easy and safe to use.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
