Mediterranean Herbs and Greek Plants

planting tips and tricks

Herbs from the Mediterranean region are commonly used in cooking and decorating. Many herbs from the Mediterranean region are aromatic. They are popular for flavoring dishes and can be used to add fragrance to a dish. Oregano is a popular Greek spice and can be added to a vegetable orchard. This herb does best in a dry, hot climate.

Many of these herbs are surprisingly easy to grow. There are many varieties of most of these herbs. Cilantro is the most well-known herb that came from the Mediterranean. It is a perennial plant with small leaves and flowers. The seeds are the most widely used type of herb in Mediterranean cooking. You can dry them and store them in the refrigerator. When growing herbs in containers, ensure the soil retains a high level of moisture. This will ensure healthy plants that produce good crops.

gardening tips for march/april

Some Mediterranean herbs require more effort than others. It is important to take extra care when growing herbs that are susceptible or cold-sensitive. You should choose a plant that is resistant to fungal disease if you start a new herb from seeds. It is best to use multipurpose compost instead of manure, as manure has high levels of nitrogen and is not recommended for this type of garden.

Most Mediterranean herbs are drought-tolerant. However, there are some exceptions. Basil, for example, can be found in the dried form, and is a versatile spice that can be used in a variety of dishes. Basil can be used in seasonings, as a paste, and to season a dish. Some of these spices are also edible. Sage can be used in baking. Its pungent flavor makes it a great choice for cooking chicken, fish, and poultry.

The Mediterranean region also has rosemary, sage and common sage. These plants need full sun and well-draining soil. They are drought-tolerant but still require water. Mediterranean herb gardens should be grown in sunny and warm places with lots of sunlight. Once they have established themselves, you can simply leave them alone in the garden.

Mediterranean herbs can be grown in soil that is pH 7 or slightly alkaline. However, they can also tolerate moderately acid soils. The Mediterranean garden soil pH should range from neutral to alkaline. A pH of 6 is ericaceous and kills the roots of these herbs. The soil pH should not be acidic or neutral if you're growing herbs from the Mediterranean.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
